How To Change Shift Cable On 2004 F150

  • #1

What'southward the easiest way to change the bellows on the shift cable?
Whatsoever manner to practice it WITHOUT removing whole outdrive?
It's a 1993 Mercruiser 3.0 I/O

Thanks in accelerate

You lot don't have to remove the whole bulldoze, just the upper half... :D

You have to pull the shift cable out to get the new bellows in, for me a new shift cable would exist going in, unless the thing is only a couple of years one-time, in which example I would have replaced the bellows when the cable was changed.

Ok thanks guys, I'yard less experienced with Stern drive applications so I appreciate it.
To remove that upper one-half of out drive, just remove the bolts and separate it? What else would take to be done? All the videos and stuff that I've found have just been bits n pieces of the job. I don't want to start replacing bellow without proper knowledge.

Is there a pdf version of a repair manual I tin report?
How much harder would out exist to supercede all the bellows?

SEI has a good you tube video for that. In fact, they take a few very informative videos. Do a search.

I have changed the bellows without removing the bulldoze. It's tricky and requires a few 'slight of easily', but can exist done.

Remove shift cable from shift plate.
Remove blackness slide and metallic threaded rod from shift plate terminate of cablevision
Secure a string to the finish of the shift cable, making the connectedness every bit narrow as possible
Plough steering hard to Port and tie it there.
Working exterior the boat
Remove the end of the shift cable bellows from the gimbal housing (or if you know you're replacing it, just cutting it off)
Now advisedly pull the shift cable out of the gimbal housing, ensuring the curve information technology creates with the end in the bong-housing is not too tight
Continue pulling until the cord comes out.
Remove the cord, slide the new bellows and new hose/bellows clench on, re-secure the cord
Working inside the gunkhole
Pull the string support (y'all'll have to help guide the cablevision back in)
Have someone else on the outside of the boat ensuring the cablevision doesn't pull likewise tight a bend
Working inside the boat
Reinstall the threaded rod and black plastic guide on the cablevision
Install the forepart end of the bellows on the gimbal housing
Perform shift cablevision adjustment as per my video.

Although what Chris says is admittedly correct (and what he says commonly is) information technology would be unwise for someone less expereinced to try his method.

Starting time, it is a tight spot to work and if you are not 100% familiar with what y'all are trying to reach you may find it causes more frustration than but popping the drive leg off. Only more importantly if your shift cable bellows is leaking y'all may besides have h2o in the u-articulation bellows and that gets into the gimbal bearing then forth. Information technology is piece of cake to remove the drive leg and with it off yous have admission to all that stuff for inspection. Non to mention information technology would be a whole lot easier for the inexpereinced to change the shift cable and bellows.

I agree with the concept that if the shift cable bellows is gone and you are in for that job, which requires pulling out the old cablevision, you lot may as well replace the cable while you are there. The kit comes with all the hardware to renew both ends of the cable.

I take inverse the bellows without removing the bulldoze. It's tricky and requires a few 'slight of easily', but tin be washed.

Remove shift cable from shift plate.
Remove black slide and metallic threaded rod from shift plate cease of cable
Secure a cord to the end of the shift cable, making the connection equally narrow as possible
Plow steering hard to Port and tie it there.
Working exterior the boat
Remove the end of the shift cable bellows from the gimbal housing (or if you know you're replacing it, just cut it off)
Now carefully pull the shift cable out of the gimbal housing, ensuring the bend information technology creates with the stop in the bell-housing is not too tight
Go on pulling until the cord comes out.
Remove the cord, slide the new bellows and new hose/bellows clench on, re-secure the cord
Working inside the boat
Pull the cord back up (you'll have to help guide the cablevision back in)
Have someone else on the exterior of the boat ensuring the cable doesn't pull too tight a bend
Working inside the gunkhole
Reinstall the threaded rod and black plastic guide on the cablevision
Install the forepart cease of the bellows on the gimbal housing
Perform shift cable aligning as per my video.

hmm, you alive almost me and wanna make some extra money? 😁 Jk
I'1000 thinking if I should just tackle everything, gimble bearing, and all bellows.
Also, I thought I noticed a calorie-free clunking noise when I had it out yesterday ONLY when I turned nether throttle. I was figuring this could be a U-joint making noise?

And then should I ....
A-try to replace just the shift bellow without removing outdrive (advisedly)
B- remove outdrive, supersede ALL bellows, gimble bearing, u-articulation, and shift cable

hmm, y'all live near me and wanna make some extra money? ; Jk

If Virginia is close to Perth, Western Australia, then sure, why not.... ;)

If information technology helps, on Tuesday afternoon I'll be in New Orleans....

So should I ....
A-try to supervene upon only the shift blare without removing outdrive (carefully)
B- remove outdrive, replace ALL bellows, gimble bearing, u-joint, and shift cable

ok! "B" it is! Now i but gotta get all the parts locally hopefully and any tools I'll demand. I've saw couple "special" tools needed, do yous know what they are or if this can be washed with normal mechanics tools?

  • #fourteen

Hey I institute a kit for $160 that comes with gimble begetting, shift cablevision, bellows, glue and all hoses and seals! Not too bad!
How do I brand sure I'm buying the correct parts? Are they all the same for alpha drives? Mine is a 1993 if that matters 3.0

  • #15

Also, is in that location a PDF manual for this matter? Or a Actually descriptive video tutorial?

Eric three.7LX Alpha one;n9979022]I would pull the drive off and check the gimbal bearing offset. If it feels skillful why alter it?

** I just figured while it was apart information technology might be wise to change...?

You'll demand an alignment tool besides. I would do all of the bellows at the same time and a new shift cablevision.

**What is the alignment tool used for? The shift cable?

Service Manual #14 covers Gen2'south

Thanks! I'm gonna study the manual! Lol
